What is prevention?

Prevention focuses on reducing the likelihood of or delaying the onset of behavioral health problems. This is accomplished through evidence-based prevention programs aimed at reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors. It is an integral part of a healthy community as prevention promotes the health and safety of individuals and communities.

Effective prevention programs and interventions may have different areas of focus and can be              implemented in a variety of settings. Interventions can involve the family, school, and community and may provide prevention on an individual basis or to a group of youth by focusing on developmental factors, environmental and community factors and policies, or skill development.
